Schubert studied with the National Socialist professor Viktor Christian in 1941-1945. While his doctoral teacher was engaged in anti-Semitic "Jewish research", the study of Hebrew for Schubert represented an act of solidarity with the persecuted Jews.
Kurt Schubert reported in detail about the reopening of the University of Vienna in 1945, which he experienced as a member of the Catholic resistance. As a self-titled "student rector" he wrote himself into the university history.
After 1945, Schubert began a scholarly career as a Judaist, was appointed professor in 1966, and at the same time established an independent Department of Jewish Studies. In 1990, the University of Vienna appointed him an honorary senator.
The Kurt and Ursula Schubert Archive was presented to the University of Vienna as part of a ceremony on 20 March 2017.
