After massive public criticism of Klimt's representation, the artist bought back the paintings that remained private until their destruction in 1945.

Gemäß Haustradition handelt es sich bei diesem Bildnis Kaiser Josephs II. um jenes aus der Alten Universitätsbibliothek in der Postgasse. Ein Bibliotheksinventar aus dem Jahre 1821 verzeichnet als Nummer 57 im Lesesaal der Bibliothek ein "Porträt Sr. Majestät Kaiser Joseph II. in vergoldetem Rahmen". In einem Inventar der Universitätsbibliothek von 1883, unmittelbar vor der Übersiedlung in das neue Hauptgebäude an der Ringstraße, wird das Bild im "Lesesaale des II. Stockes" lokalisiert. Ein Jahr nach der Übersiedlung befand es sich bereits im Büro des Bibliotheksvorstandes.
